Q: What is Maths Recovery?

A: Maths Recovery which is part of the Department of Education and Youth’s DEIS initiative, rolled out through Oide, is an intervention programme which can be used with individuals, groups or in-class situations depending on each individual school’s needs and profile.

Q: What is the focus of the Maths Recovery programme?

A: The aim of the Maths Recovery training programme is to provide a substantial theoretical background and practical approaches for teachers leading and supporting the implementation of Number through using Maths Recovery in their schools.

Q: What schools can access Maths Recovery through the DEIS programme?

A: Maths Recovery is available to Urban Band 1 and Urban Band 2 schools.

Q: How can our school access Maths Recovery?

A: A letter of invitation is sent to all Urban Band 1 and Urban Band 2 schools after Easter and schools are invited to apply.

Q: What criteria are used in allocating places on the DEIS Maths Recovery programme?

A: In allocating places, priority will be given to schools who do not currently have a Maths Recovery teacher; schools who have a Maths Recovery teacher, but they are in a class and cannot provide intensive individualised Maths Recovery support; schools who feel they need to have an extra Maths Recovery teacher trained due to their size, profile, or circumstances. Consideration will be given to your plans for the Maths Recovery teacher. After that, should places be available they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Q: What does the Maths Recovery training involve?

A: Attendance at four days of training in a central location and a minimum of 10 online sessions (2.5 hours each) between September and May, and completion of a case study based on a target pupil.

Q: Is there substitution available to schools for participating teachers?

A: No.

Q: Is travel and subsistence provided to attend the training?

A: Yes, travel and subsistence are paid as per the usual DEY conditions through the Clare Education Centre.
